Ahh, November… or some might say, Movember. Lots of changes happen in November, from the change in weather to the change in holiday spirit with Christmas right around the corner, as well as a worldwide activity known as Movember. Men all over the world join in on this and grow as much of a moustache as they can throughout November to help men from dying too young.
The Movember Foundation started out as 2 men in Australia with a dream to bring back the moustache as well as help stop men from dying so young. They gathered 30 people willing to take on the challenge. In one year it went from 30 people to 480 and from $0 to $50,468. By 2007 there were 200,095 Mo Bros and Mo Sista’s. They had then raised $28,492,397 with the participating countries of Australia, Canada, U.S.A, New Zealand, UK and Spain. Flash forward 8 years to 2015 and there are now 5,232,625 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, $759 million raised and Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA all participating in this worldwide event.
Some may know about this but not know exactly what it’s for. This 30 day activity is to help men from dying too young. The Movember Foundation is a global organisation who’s known for trying to change the ‘face’ of men’s health, but what is causing these men from dying so young? The Movember Foundation is working on preventing types of cancer such as prostate and other types of cancer at the same time as trying to help men out with mental health and suicide prevention. The Movember organisation’s goal is to reduce to amount of premature deaths in men by 25% for the year 2030.
There are multiple ways you can participate in this Movember, even for women. The main way people choose to get involved is by letting a moustache grow on their face although this way may not work for some people, specifically women. Another big way to help out and contribute is by donating. Donate to a Mo Bro or Mo Sista, or donate straight to the Movember Foundation. Even if you didn’t donate during this November, you can easily donate all year round. Another alternative is to participate in the move challenge. What is the move challenge? Whatever you make it. The Movember organisation is encouraging you to move, whether it be running or swimming, just move! Try to beat your personal best, learn something new and try to raise funds while doing it. You can also host an event. This is a good way to raise awareness.
Movember is a time anyone can participate, even women. Each year more people join the Movember community and more money is fundraised. We will just have to wait and see how well we did this year!
