Pop, Alternative, and Punk: New Music of October 2016

By: Cal R.

Whether you’ve wrung dry your favourite songs by hearing the same repetitive tune on repeat for three months, or have been furiously dancing in your kitchen to the songs you know like the back of your hand; these nine new albums (by some pretty awesome artists) will be nothing but refreshing – no matter if you’re into pop, alternative, or punk.

POP

  1. NOBODY BUT ME – BY MICHAEL BUBLE

iTunes rating: 4.5/5 stars

Number two on the charts, Michael Buble’s new album Nobody But Me seems to be engaging listeners across Canada. The 10 tracks in Nobody But Me bursts with joy and excitement, mixed with a pinch of an electronic vibe and finished off with his signature touch of smooth jazz; creating a song that is distinct to the one and only, Michael Buble.

  1. JOANNE – BY LADY GAGA

iTunes rating: 4.5/5 stars

Before listening to Joanne you might want to get that image of Lady Gaga in a meat dress out of your head… done? Well, now dressed with a pink hat that certainly stands out, Gaga delivered Joanne with great pride. With fourteen songs on the deluxe album, she didn’t fail to up her game.

  1. OH MY MY – BY ONEREPUBLIC

Radiating with the signature sound of pop music, OneRepublic’s new album, Oh My My is filled with passion and joy, as well as energy and spirit; ideal for long drives, hanging out with friends, or even studying. All sixteen tracks on Oh My My deserve a listen.

ALTERNATIVE

  1. GAMESHOW – BY TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB

(psst! use the arrows or click and drag for a 360° view!)

iTunes rating: 5/5 stars

After three inactive years of reorganisation, Two Door Cinema Club’s new album, Gameshow, caught Two Door fans by surprise. Having carried a distinct happy-indie-alternative vibe for six years, brightly highlighted in the 2011 sensation, ‘What You Know,’ Two Door came to a consensus to shed their past and create something new. Their album Gameshow reflects those changes, new with an 80s vibe, an electronic twist, and overflowing with falsetto. Two Door’s new ‘alteronica’ release had climbed to eighth on the charts on the day of release for a reason, that being listening to Gameshow is a must.

[Gameshow released on October 14, 2016]

  1. SIMPLE FORMS – BY THE NAKED AND FAMOUS

iTunes rating: 5/5 stars

The Naked and Famous’ new album arrived on Oct 14, flashing with bright colours. Higher, the song linked above, is the track that stands out the most, in my view. It perfectly balances energy, emotion, and excitement, making for the ideal tune to sing along to. Simple Forms has ten outstanding songs for fans, as well as those new to the Naked and Famous.

  1. WALLS – BY THE KINGS OF LEON

iTunes rating: 4.5/5 stars

Fourth on the charts, Walls by the Kings of Leon not only surprised their fans, but also those new to the band. After the release of Walls, the hype for their new album has been off the walls. Showcased by both iTunes and Spotify, Walls has been getting the praise that it deserves, for it’s beat, vocals and it’s all-around greatness.

PUNK

  1. ALONE – PRETENDERS

average rating: 3.5/5 stars

With twelve tracks, Alone by Pretenders possesses strong guitar riffs as well as unique vocals. This album will stand out especially if you’re a fan of the Bangles, Robert Palmer, or Joe Jackson (according to Spotify).

[Alone released October 21, 2016]

  1. REVOLUTION RADIO – BY GREEN DAY

iTunes rating: 4.5/5 stars

Well known from their songs American Idiot and Basket Case, Green Day released their new album, Revolution Radio, on October 7th – hot and on fire. Revolution Radio gives off vibes filled with power and energy, something to certainly check out.

  1. LET THE SILENCE STAY WHERE IT WAS – BY SPARROWS

(ps. this band is v e r y underground. they have less than 150 followers on spotify so i had to do some serious digging to find them. you’re welcome.)

unrated

After listening to a couple songs from Let the Silence Stay Where It Was, I had come to the conclusion that Sparrows, unknown to many punk fans, certainly need more listeners. Their new album is quite energetic and doesn’t fail to peak your interest. Let the Silence is perfect for the constant or casual punk-rock listener.
