Track and Field was to-the-Max Once Again

By Jacob G

On May 26th, 2015, the 200 grade seven and eight students took part in the in-school track and field meet. This was the second half of the fourth annual event (grades five and six participated earlier this month), which featured two track events: the 100-metre sprint and the 100-metre hurdles, and five field events, which were javelin, discus, shot-put, high jump and long jump. This event was once again very successful, thanks to the efforts of the physical education teachers, and especially to Ms. Julie Jansen.

The sprinting events, the discus and javelin took place in the South field, the shot put took place in the West Field, the high jump was in The Shop, and the long jump took place in the gym. The event was originally scheduled for May the 14th, but was postponed due to rain. It was looking like it would be possibly postponed again, bas a 40% chance of thundershowers loomed, but it never happened. There were so many different winners, (see the top three in each event below), and grade eight participant Lucas Ion couldn’t have described it better: “This event showed how diverse Westmount’s athletics are.”

Twins Carter and Hunter Marcelo, each year have continued to build on their large collection of Top Five certificates. This year was no different. With their positive attitudes and great efforts, the boys finished in the top five in three events. Hunter took 2nd place in both the 100-metre dash, with a time of 12.43 seconds and in the 100-metre hurdles, with a time of 15.72, while Carter tied for 5th in high jump, where he jumped 1.30 metres. That isn’t all they did that week. Two days later, the twins, who are also part of Westmount’s track and field team, finished high in their events once again. Hunter finished 2nd in the 100-metre dash, posting a time of 12.25 seconds, which is a mere 2.67 behind Usain Bolt’s world record time. He also finished 3rd in the 300-metres, and 2nd in the long jump, with 4.66 metres. Carter finished 12th in long jump with 4.05 metres, and 9th in high jump with 1.25 metres. The boys also did well in the Westmount Sports Awards, as Hunter won Most Outstanding Cross-Country runner and Carter won Most Improved Track and Field athlete.

With all of these excellent results, next year looks like a promising one for Westmount athletics.
