A Flight Through History

Humans have always been fascinated in flight. If you look at ancient China they tried to make kites and rockets for flight but never succeeded. Leonardo Da Vinci drew pictures of flying objects but these designs never took flight either. On December 17, 1903 Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane 20 feet above a beach in North Carolina. From that period in history advancements in flight moved quickly. Only twenty-three years after the Wright brothers first took flight Charles A. Lindbergh flew a non-stop trip across the Atlantic Ocean by himself. Within a century advancements in flight have made it common for humans to fly in planes. Also exploring space isn’t a crazy idea anymore, but is something accepted by everyone.  What humans have accomplished in a century and how far technology has come in this time period is really quite amazing.

Space travel hasn’t always been about the adventurous side of humans but rather space travel was highly political in the beginning. The U.S.A. and the Soviet Union at the time were competing to get a man on the moon which was a very big deal. It swayed politicians to use this in their campaigns. John F. Kennedy promised to do so and this helped him to be the president of the U.S.A. This pushed scientists to research space flight capabilities because these two Cold War rivals definitely didn’t want to lose the space race. The Soviet Union was the first to get a man in space when Yuri A. Gagarin had a 108 minute orbit flight 320 kilometers above Earth. Although the Soviet Union was the first to get a man in space, the U.S.A. was the first to get a man on the moon. Apollo 11 carried Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins which won the U.S.A the space race. The politics behind space exploration heavily impacted the rate at which humans have been able to get into space.

Even now politics can influence space exploration but curiosity has led to bigger explorations than ever seen before. There are volunteers to live on Mars which is a project hoped to be launched by 2020. We can look for habitable planets which we might need to eventually move to because Earth will not always be a suitable planet for humans to live on.  People have been thinking that exploring our galaxy and the universe around us, with these powerful telescopes like the Hubble will actually be beneficial for us. Also organizations like NASA have been able to develop new technologies in space, which can also be applied to products for everyday life. Before politics heavily influenced space exploration, however today the science behind space and the curiosity of humans pushes us to further our understanding and knowledge of our universe.

For the future of space exploration many things will be possible. In the 20th century humans just started to have powered flight, and now space flight is something known to everyone. So in a century we have accomplished so much so in another century, space travel could be something not out of the ordinary. Advancements will keep being made and we will be able to learn so much more of what we already know.
